BGMEA

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) is one of the largest trade associations in the country representing the readymade garment industry, particularly the woven garments, knitwear and sweater sub-sectors with equal importance. Starting its journey in 1983 today BGMEA takes care of an industry that is at the backbone of Bangladesh’s economy. Since the inception, BGMEA is dedicated to promote and facilitate the apparel industry through policy advocacy to the government, services to members, ensuring workers’ rights and social compliance at factories.

BGMEA works with the vision to develop the RMG industry of Bangladesh and the economy of the country. Having such vision BGMEA chalked out the following missions and its strategic direction is paved accordingly –

Firstly, to protect and promote the interests of the industry; thus ensuring a sustained growth in the foreign exchange earnings of the country.

Secondly, BGMEA is ccommitted to ensure all legitimate rights and privileges of the garment workers. The association also strives toward the betterment of the society and environment.

BGMEA is being run by a 27-member elected Board of Directors. The Board of Directors is elected for a two-year term. Four Vice Presidents having important portfolios, along with a secretariat of experienced officials, assists the President in formulating and executing vital policies and programs of the organization. The President is the highest executive authority of the association. The Board of Directors takes assistance from different Standing Committees headed by a Chairman and composed of members having vast experience in the related fields. Strict adherence to democratic norms and code of conduct are being maintained in the BGMEA elections, which has been regarded as a trend setter in trade body elections of Bangladesh for its pre-election projection caucus and election-day discipline.

BGMEA started with only 12 members in 1978 and presently has around 5150 member factories. Around 40% of BGMEA member factories are knitwear and sweater manufactures, and the rest 60% are woven garment manufactures. BGMEA member factories account for 100% woven garment exports of the country and more than 95% of sweater exports, while around half of the light knitwear exports are made by them.

BTMA

Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) is the national trade organization of Primary Textile Industry i.e. Yarn Manufacturing, Fabric Manufacturing and Dyeing-Printing-Finishing mills of the country under private sector. BTMA is registered in 1983, among others the following are the main objectives:

1. To promote and protect the trade, commerce and manufacturers of Bangladesh in general and of the textile related trade in particular.
2. To collect and circulate statistics and to collect, classify and circulate information relating to the trade, commerce and manufactures of its members.
3. To take all steps which may be necessary for promoting, supporting or opposing legislative and other measures affecting the trade, commerce or manufactures of its members.
4. To make representations to the appropriate authorities on any matter connected with the trade, commerce and manufactures of its members.
5. To advance and promote commercial and technical education connected with the trade and commerce of its members.
6. To undertake special inquiries and initiate or support any action for securing the redress of legitimate grievances connected with the trade or commerce of its members.
7. To engage in such activities for imports, exports of raw materials, spares and finished products for the collective benefit of the members of the Association.
8. To organize such factories and workshops for selling or display centers centrally which may be of common benefit for sections which might not be possible or feasible for individual members.

The Association is run by a BOARD OF DIRECTORS of 27 members, headed by one President and 3 Vice-Presidents, who are elected through ballot/votes as per provisions of the Trade Organization Ordinance, 1961 and Rules made there under by the Government of Bangladesh. The tenure of the Board of Directors  is 2 years. The Association has a separate Secretariat to look after all Administrative activities and is headed by the Secretary General. He is assisted by a numbers of officers in the discharge of his duties.

Currently the number of Membership of BTMA is 1364 under:

1. Yarn Manufacturing Member Mills = 383
2. Fabric Manufacturer Member Mills = 743
3. Dyeing-Printing-Finishing Member Mills = 238

Over 4.00 billion EURO has been invested in these mills and about 4.00 million people are currently employed. BTMA fulfills:

• 100 % of the domestic fabric and yarn requirement.
• 50% of the cotton oven fabric requirement of export oriented garments sub-sector.
• Over 95% of the yarn and fabric requirement of export oriented knitwear sub-sector.
